Paper Ornament Project: Woven Star
Updated: Oct 1
Materials Needed:
• DSP (I suggest a 2-sided dsp, and if possible, something
with a little shine. Seasons of Green and Gold (retired),
Traditions of Christmas (#165853) or Modern Christmas
(#165990) would all work well.
• A paper trimmer. I highly recommend the Stampin Up
trimmer (#152392) for this project because it has
measurements to the right of the blade track, making it
easier to cut ¼ inch strips.
• Twine for hanging. Anything that matches your paper
would be great like embroidery thread, or colored baker’s
twine. Black and White and Gold Baker’s Twine (#166005)
would work beautifully!
• Multipurpose Liquid Glue (#110755)
• Silicone Craft Sheet (#127853) will help you keep your
project from sticking to the grid paper.
• Pair of scissors
Instructions:
• Cut the dsp into ¼” x 6” strips. You will make 12 strips.
• Use a grid to line up two strips perpendicularly, and glue together, with the
horizontal piece on top.
Note: use a dot of glue at each place where two strips cross. Try not to use too much,
but if it leaks out, wipe off the extra glue as well as you can. Either work on a silicone
craft sheet, or pick up your project often to keep it from sticking to the grid paper.
• Place two pieces vertical and adjacent to the middle piece. Glue them in place,
on top of the horizontal piece.
• At this point, you will be weaving as you add pieces. Weave a piece above
the horizontal one and glue in place.
• Weave a piece below the horizontal one, and glue in place.
• Now take two adjacent corner pieces,
and twist them to show the other side of the
dsp. Glue the ends together at a 90-degree
angle.
• Do this in all 4 corners.
• You will end up with a piece like the
one on the right.
• Repeat all of these steps to make a
second part, using the other 6 strips.
• Now fit the two pieces together by laying one diagonally on top of the
other (insides facing).
• Tuck each long strip end into the “petal” immediately below it, and glue
in place.
• OPTIONAL: tie your hanger onto a petal before gluing the last strip in
place.
• Carefully cut off the extending ends to line up with the petals. Do not cut into
the strips that make up the petals. Just cut right along the edge as shown.
Finished ornament.
